Why Off-Road Tires Chip and Chunk

Rocks are remarkably good tire critics. They don’t care about your truck’s lift, the Instagram photos from the trailhead, or what you paid for those 37s. Give them enough heat, wheelspin, and horsepower, and they’ll happily start removing little pieces of tread.

Welcome to chipping and chunking, two forms of wear familiar to anyone who actually uses an off-road tire off-road. A few scars are usually part of the deal. Excessive damage isn’t, and understanding the difference can tell you quite a bit about your tires, your driving, and whether you’ve chosen the right rubber for the job.

Why Off-Road Tires Chip and Chunk

Chipping is exactly what it sounds like. Small pieces break away from the surface or edges of a tread block, leaving the tire looking rough or chewed. Chunking is the more enthusiastic version, where larger pieces of tread are torn away.

The culprit is usually mechanical stress.

Imagine an aggressive tread block on an RBP Repulsor M/T3 climbing a sharp rock. The block contacts the rock and grabs while several thousand pounds of truck and engine torque continue trying to rotate the tire. For a moment, that piece of rubber is being twisted, stretched, and dragged against something considerably harder than itself.

Every off-roader knows the temptation. Forward progress stops, the tires begin spinning, and your right foot suggests that horsepower might be the solution.

Occasionally, it is. Often, it just makes the rocks angrier.

A spinning tire can go from almost no resistance to tremendous grip the instant a tread block catches a solid edge. That sudden shock load is an excellent recipe for tearing rubber, particularly when the tire is already hot.

Aggressive tread helps by giving the tire more opportunities to find traction before wheelspin gets out of hand. Lowering tire pressure off-road allows the casing to flex and the tread to conform around rocks instead of simply bouncing across them. A larger contact patch also puts more tread blocks to work, spreading the load rather than asking one unlucky lug to drag the truck over an obstacle.

There’s a limit.

Go too low and excessive sidewall flex creates heat while increasing the chance of wheel, bead, and sidewall damage. The correct pressure depends on tire size, vehicle weight, load, wheel, terrain, and speed, which is why there’s no universally perfect off-road PSI.

Heat matters, too. A heavily modified truck carrying steel bumpers, a winch, recovery equipment, camping gear, and perhaps a rooftop tent can put considerably more stress into its tires than an otherwise stock vehicle. Add a long highway drive to the trailhead followed by low-pressure rock crawling and those tread blocks are having a substantially harder day than you are.

Not Every Off-Roader Needs a Mud-Terrain

Tire selection can make as much of a difference as driving technique.

The guy who spends weekends crawling through rocks and mud needs a different tire from someone whose Bronco spends Monday through Friday commuting and Saturday exploring forest roads. Choosing the most aggressive tread available simply because it looks fantastic in the driveway can mean accepting compromises you never needed.

When Should You Worry About Chunking?

A tire that’s been properly used off-road isn’t going to remain showroom perfect. Small chips, superficial cuts, and rounded tread-block edges can simply be evidence that the tire has spent time doing its job.

Large missing chunks deserve more attention. So do deep cuts reaching into the casing, exposed cords, bulges, tread separation, or substantial sidewall damage. If one tire looks dramatically worse than the other three, that’s another clue worth investigating. Pressure, alignment, vehicle loading, suspension setup, or previous damage may be contributing.

When you’re unsure whether the damage is cosmetic or structural, have the tire inspected by a qualified professional. There’s no trophy for discovering the answer at 70 mph.

Choose the RBP Tire That Matches the Trail

You can’t prevent every nick and scar if you genuinely use an off-road tire. You can control the things that accelerate the damage.

Keep pressures appropriate for the terrain. Air back up before sustained highway driving. Avoid unnecessary wheelspin. Pay attention to how much weight your build has gained, and inspect the tread after a particularly difficult trail day.
